He turned around and raced his hands on top of his head. The floor wavered before his gaze. “I’m Just a man with a heart,” he said, turning back around. “Whether my name is Braden Mack or Braden McRae. I’m just a man with a heart, and you are breaking it.”
After reading book one of The Bromance Book Club series, I had my mind set on Braden Mack being a conceited jerk who cared nothing more than about how many women he could get into his bed each night. Lyssa Kay Adams gave her readers no inclination on what version of Braden Mack would that would be appearing in book two: Undercover Bromance. In fact, after reading this book I would have to say that I have a newfound love for the charismatic, sarcastic ladies’ man. Braden mack completely stole my heart by the end of the novel.
For those of you that have not heard of this book, the basic premise surrounds Olivia (Liz for short) and Braden Mack helping one another taken down one of the most famous chef’s in Nashville, Tennessee, Royce Preston. After finding Royce sexually harassing an employee, named Jessica, at Liz’s work place, she was on a mission to stop him in his tracks. The book pertains to that situation while also devling in on the budding hate to love romance between Mack and Liz. I can’t really say too much past this point without getting into some spoilers of the plot. So, instead of talking about the plot, I would love to talk about my own hate to love story with the Mackster.
In the beginning of the novel, we see Braden through the lens of being overly confident and cocky about how to treat women. This did not sit well for me. I tend to enjoy the introverted, humble character. Even though he tries to come across as an expert at love, he can’t seem to keep a relationship to save his life. He uses books on love to dictate how he treats a women. Personally, I didn’t mind his grand jesters and actually thought that it was cute. But there did come a point in his encounters with women where it almost felt like he was doing what he thought he had to do to please a woman. It’s like he knew all the right lines to say that would get a woman to swoon and beg for him. This mixed with his hubris attitude was a complete turn off.
This all changed for me when he had his second sexual encounter with Liz. He was beginning to show true feelings of wanting to care about someone other than himself. There were also so many times in this novel where he wanted to “protect” Liz at all cost. Even though some readers might have agreed with Liz and thought he was also trying to save her and do everything for her, I thought his actions were down right incredible and not something that I was expecting to see from his character. To me, he was showing her that she was someone special to him, and he didn’t want anything bad to happen to her. Braden also showed his true colors when he finally revealed to her why he changed his name to Braden Mack. Even though he waited to tell Liz until after Royce told his secret, he showed a different side of himself that he never showed anyone else before. Braden was able to show sensitivity in a moment of vulnerability. I believe this showed true admirability.
If I were to rate this novel, I would give it a 4/5. I loved the comedic aspects of it. Also, I enjoyed the banter and sarcasm from the two main characters. I would say that the ending since was a little rushed for me. I wish the idea was expounded upon a little more. I also did’t enjoy Liz’s attitude about wanting to be so independent. She didn’t allow Mack to be a true gentlemen. Overall, this book was a very enjoyable read.
